He was then awarded a Gold Medalist & Class topper in the area of finance and accounting at XLRI Jamshedpur from January 1987 to January 1989. In January 1989, Shankar Narayanan received a Bachelor of Technology - BTech Civil Engineering degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. On completion of his undergraduate degree, Shankar Narayanan was awarded his first professional certification, the M.C.A. (Master of Civil Architecture).
