Ricardo Araneda

Dr. Ricardo Araneda is an esteemed Associate Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he specializes in the intricate fields of neuroscience and molecular biology. With a robust academic foundation that began in Chile, where he earned his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Concepción, Dr. Araneda has dedicated his career to understanding the complex mechanisms of brain function, particularly in the realm of dopaminergic signaling. His undergraduate thesis on brain dopamine release at the Catholic University in Santiago laid the groundwork for his future research endeavors.

At UMD, Dr. Araneda teaches a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, including BSCI440 Mammalian Physiology and NACS641 Introduction to Neurosciences. His courses are designed to engage students in the dynamic interplay between physiological processes and neurological functions, fostering a deep understanding of how these systems interact. He also leads the NACS608 Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Seminar, where he encourages critical thinking and discussion among students about current trends and breakthroughs in neuroscience.

Dr. Araneda's research focuses on the neurobiology of chemoreception, exploring how organisms detect and respond to chemical stimuli in their environment. His work employs advanced techniques such as immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and electrophysiology to investigate cellular and molecular responses in the nervous system. As a member of the Neuroscience & Cognitive Science (NACS) and BISI-Physiological Systems (PSYS) graduate programs, he actively mentors students, guiding them through their research projects and helping them develop essential skills in scientific writing and statistical analysis.
