About Pieter Coulier

đź“– Summary

Senior Simulation Development Engineer @ Velo3D Campbell, CaliforniaVisiting postdoctoral researcher @ Stanford University Postdoctoral research at the Stanford "Mechanics and Computation Group"• development of fast linear solvers for the solution of large scale problems• application of novel numerical methods to the simulation of Stokes flow, low-frequency Helmholtz problems, and mesh deformation for fluid-structure interaction. From October 2014 to August 2016 (1 year 11 months) Stanford, CaliforniaPostdoctoral Research Fellow (FWO) @ KU Leuven Funded by a competitive postdoctoral fellowships of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), intended to support researchers in developing an independent, international research career. From June 2014 to August 2016 (2 years 3 months) Leuven, BelgiumFrancqui Foundation Fellow @ Belgian American Educational Foundation • Postdoctoral fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation (B.A.E.F.) at Stanford University.• B.A.E.F. is the leading independent philanthropy in the support of exchanging university students, scientists, and scholars between the United States and Belgium. From October 2014 to September 2015 (1 year) PhD fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) @ KU Leuven Within the frame of his PhD, Pieter developed numerical methods for the solution of large dynamic soil-structure interaction problems (as arising in the field of noise and vibration). These numerical techniques are an order of magnitude faster than state-of-the art methods, hence enabling large scale computations with limited computational resources. His research required an interdisciplinary approach, combining aspects from engineering, computer science, and mathematics. He developed strong programming skills in C++ and MATLAB.Pieter was actively involved in the FP7 project RIVAS (2011-2013), which brought together 26 European stakeholders (academic and industrial) and focused on the mitigation of railway induced vibrations. He developed computational tools and performed numerical simulations that contributed to the design and implementation of vibration countermeasures. At KU Leuven, Pieter also contributed to teaching and consulting activities of the Structural Mechanics Section. From October 2010 to May 2014 (3 years 8 months) Leuven, BelgiumVisiting Researcher @ University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, Dynamics and Vibration Research Group. From June 2013 to October 2013 (5 months) Cambridge, United KingdomInternship @ Jan De Nul Six-week civil engineering internship at a major dredging company. From July 2009 to August 2009 (2 months) Castellón, Spain
