Nicolas Descostes

Nicolas Descostes currently serves as the Head of Bioinformatics at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), where he leverages over a decade of expertise in analyzing sequencing data related to gene expression. His role is pivotal in bridging the gap between experimental science and computational analysis, enabling research groups to derive meaningful insights from complex datasets. Nicolas has collaborated on more than 20 diverse projects, working closely with both senior and junior scientists to tackle a wide array of biological questions. His extensive experience is reflected in the approximately 350 scientific and 230 technical consulting sessions he has provided to seven research groups, showcasing his commitment to fostering a collaborative research environment.

In addition to his consulting work, Nicolas co-chairs the EMBL Workflow Management Systems workstream, where he plays a crucial role in optimizing data management and service provision across the institute. As a member of the EMBL Data Science Program's Executive Committee, he contributes to strategic discussions on data management and teaching initiatives, ensuring that the latest bioinformatics methodologies are integrated into the research workflow. His leadership extends to supervising four students and leading 12 workshops, where he imparts his knowledge of next-generation sequencing (NGS), R programming, and tools like Snakemake and Docker.

Nicolas also spearheads the EMBL Bioinformatics Club, fostering a community of practice that encourages knowledge sharing and innovation in computational biology. His skill set, which includes project management and effective communication, positions him as a key player in advancing EMBL's mission to drive scientific discovery through data-driven insights. With a passion for bioinformatics and a dedication to mentoring the next generation of scientists, Nicolas Descostes continues to make significant contributions to the field, enhancing the capabilities of researchers at EMBL and beyond.
