That process includes identifying the product direction to capture the opportunity, detailed requirements, maintaining a great relationship and agile execution with the development team, market and sales field enablement, through to customer support and product end of life.
Director, Product Management @ Delivered a ground breaking new IoT device, the ecobee3 thermostat, that raised the bar in the category for great industrial design, UX and UI design for the device and companion mobile and web apps. This shook up the category and raised revenues substantially.
Provide direction to a team of 3 on product management process, focusing on the most valuable opportunities and rejecting profitable but distracting ones. Build roadmap process, drive roadmap prioritization and wiki based product requirements documents. As user champion, drive customer needs from a vibrant and engaged user community into product as delightful usable features.
Manage fully delivery life-cycle including engagements and relationships with external industrial design and manufacturing design firms, grooming product backlog, maintaining project schedules, budgets and personnel allocations, beta testing, field enablement. From January 2013 to July 2015 (2 years 7 months) Toronto, Canada AreaProgram Manager @ Part of the management team of an internal technology incubator group. Delivered technology & business plans with the product line teams of each initiative that clearly defined addressable markets, competitive differentiation and approach to capture opportunities.
Created and managed a hybrid of a funnel and stage gate process, used by senior management for objective and repeatable decisions about priority and resource allocation between 10 initiatives.
Used a scrum of scrum models to track progress on the multiple simultaneous initiatives. Scrums were run by scrum masters from within each of the initiative teams.
Drove structured conversations with business owners to ensure that program risk was monitored and mitigated and that sentiment was quantified for analytics based decisions. From November 2011 to January 2013 (1 year 3 months) Product Manager @ Drove a coherent multi-platform strategy spanning multiple IBM business analytics products to ensure support across operating systems, data sources etc. Introduced support for new OSes and data sources and brought under performing and aging platforms to end of life.
Used Agile and Scrum to collaboratively manage the backlog and execution priorities for the development team.
Defined the opportunity, business case and requirements, along with the development organization and lead customer for a ground breaking semantic data analytics product. Led the decision to stop development when the prototype and early market gate criteria were not met.
Delighted customers and field teams with ongoing clear communication about their areas of focus and ensuring that they remained engaged with and excited about the product roadmap. From March 2010 to January 2012 (1 year 11 months) Ottawa, Canada AreaSofware Development Manager @ Successfully built and managed a team of ten developers working on IBM’s offering for business process management tools. Delivered six releases of the tools with quality and on time while coaching the team and managing their development, compensation and retention.
Worked closely with product management to refine customer needs and deliver business rules editors, a visual programming editor and version comparison tools that enabled customers to simplify the authoring and automation of business processes.
Managed Eclipse based development (WebSphere Integration Developer) and development of a web-based application (WebSphere Business Compass) written using Adobe Flex and Dojo.
Moved to an Agile and Scrum based development model from a monolithic waterfall type development cycle. From 2006 to April 2010 (4 years) Advisory SW Developer @ Developed the parser technology used to provide a simplified business rules language for IBM’s business rules editors and tools. This was a key component that made programming oriented tools accessible to business users.
Incorporated automatic code assistance technology and semantically meaningful error messages targeting business users, thereby greatly increasing usability and improving the UX.
Provided mentoring to interns, demoed products, provided scheduling and planning estimates to management for features and maintenance. From 2003 to 2006 (3 years) Senior Software Engineer @ Designed, developed and delivered the data management component of a distributed, lightweight in-memory database providing client applications with a coherent view of network objects.
Accountable for these components from concept to deployment, taking every measure to ensure the success of internal clients, who relied on the data management service to provide network administration and management functions. From 2001 to 2003 (2 years) Software Developer @ Arrived at Rational through the ObjecTime acquisition. Developed new features for a computer aided software engineering tool, Rose Real Time, the successor of ObecTime Developer.
Continued to define SCM integration requirements; then delivered integration with SCM tools from Rational and Microsoft.
Worked to provide part of the model to code generation capability and the re-engineering the model from developer modified generated code. From 1998 to 2001 (3 years) Software Developer @ Developed new features and performed maintenance for a computer aided software engineering tool, ObjecTime Developer.
Worked directly with large clients such as Lucent and Nortel and product management to define SCM integration requirements; then delivered integration with SCM tools such as Rational ClearCase and Microsoft Visual SourceSafe. From 1996 to 1998 (2 years)
