Matthew Rock

Matthew Rock is currently a Ph.D. student at Dartmouth College, immersed in the Ecology, Evolution, Environment, and Society Program. Under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Laidre, Matthew is at the forefront of research exploring the intricate social dynamics and population structure of hermit crabs, specifically focusing on the species Cenobita compressus. His work employs advanced methodologies, including Fragment Analysis, to dissect the genetic diversity and social interactions within hermit crab populations. This research not only contributes to our understanding of crustacean behavior but also sheds light on broader ecological principles that govern social structures in animal communities.

Matthew's expertise in population genetics is complemented by his proficiency in Next Generation Sequencing, which allows for a detailed examination of genetic variation and evolutionary processes. His technical skills extend to programming languages such as R, C++, and Python, enabling him to analyze complex datasets and model ecological scenarios effectively. Additionally, his background in aseptic techniques and chemical safety underscores his commitment to maintaining rigorous standards in laboratory research.
