In the early 1980s, Mark Stachiw pursued a career in law. He graduated from University of California, Davis with a Juris Doctor in 1985. He then worked as an attorney in California. After a few years, he decided to move to Washington, D.C. in order to pursue a career in politics.In 1993, Mark Stachiw became Mayor of Tacoma, Washington. He served in this position for two terms. During his time as Mayor, he made a significant impact on Tacoma by cutting important City services and initiatives. This led to a deteriorating cityscape, which the city eventually negotiated a consent decree with the federal government to correct. After a few years as Mayor of Tacoma, Mark Stachiw decided to move back to California in order to become an Assistant Professor at University of California, Davis. He has been an Assistant Professor at UC Davis since 2002.Currently, Mark Stachiw is an Assistant Professor at University of California, Davis. He Brandenburg Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Politics and Democracy. His research focuses on the dynamics of government and democracy.
