💡 Technical & Interpersonal Skills
What Murphy created, I created for people with disabilitiesLydia X Z Brown has been working in the Disability Justice field for over 10 years, first as a Disability Rights Advocate, then as an Attorney-Activist and Organizer. Informed by her personal experiences with, and fight against, discrimination and inequality, Lydia X Z Brown has prosecuted and litigated issues with corporations, governments, and other institutions. She has also developed new disabilities programs and strategies, taught public policy, and SDLts research in order toameasure blind discrimination and to change the way people with disabilities are marginalized. In her role as Disability Rights Advocate, Lydia X Z BrownAct as Civil Grand Marshall for the Disabled American Veterans’ Annual dinner, as resource and advisor to the Disability Rights Advocates Guild of America, and as an advocate for the Doris Kearns Goodwin Fellowship for Disability Rights.Murphy created, I created for people with disabilitiesI came up with the idea for the Disability Justice campaign in the late 1990’s. In those days, there was still a lot of discrimination against people with disabilities. The way people thought about and touched Disabled Americans was still very negative. So, I came up with the idea to create a campaign that would talk about the simple things: how people with disabilities can enjoy life just as much as anyone else. After I created the campaign, I wanted to know more about how people with disabilities experience life. I started reading articles and watching videos on the internet and began to see the ways that disabilities can limit people’s lives. I also started to listen to people who had disabilities and see their experiences for myself. I soon realized that there were a lot of misconceptions about people with disabilities. To start to change that, I started a website called ‘The Disabled American’s Voice’. It was an online resource where I would post articles, videos, and testimony from people with disabilities. I also started a blog to help people understand the rights of people with disabilities and to share out the information I had gathered.Since I started the website, I’ve learned a lot about program development, social services, and tax laws. I’ve also learned a lot about copy editing, flapboarding, and mobile app development. I believe that my experience and skills in these fields will help me to be a valuable resource for your website or project.
