💡 Technical & Interpersonal Skills
Shifting focus away from Search, toward the primary backend system powering LinkedIn's Economic Graph. Continuing to support LinkedIn's Feed.Senior Site Reliability Engineer, Search and Feed at LinkedIn from January 2018 to April 2019 (1 year 4 months) in Mountain View, California. Driving substantial operational improvements to the backend system powering LinkedIn's feed. While technically proficient and capable of handling LinkedIn's business needs, the backend system has historically been difficult to support operationally.I spent 2018 contributing numerous mainline code changes (Java) that have enabled an operator to allocate new replicas with minimal manual work. Project components included:- Codebase cleanup, plumbing together the logical creation of objects representing discrete data stores into a single place that is easy for a fellow developer to follow and maintain. These were previously scattered across the codebase, added quickly as LinkedIn's business requirements of the feed rapidly scaled.- Improved data validation of data stores upon application startup.- Moved the existing backup process inside the JVM from Python sidecar apps. These apps were tedious and error-prone to support, as they had to be maintained in lockstep with the mainline changes to the Java application. This code routinely stores backups in a central data repository, following best practices including data checksumming, atomic move after transfer, and exponential backoff with random initial backoffs.- Created automatic restore functionality inside the application that enables self-loading and startup with a valid dataset following a cold start. This had previously required human action. Though the processes had been automated with Python scripts, they needed to be done after the initial provisioning of the Java application, leading to productivity drain on the SRE team.- Reworked aspects of the application to play nicer with LinkedIn's standard tooling. This gets it lots of things for free such as improved post-deploy sanity checking, automatic manual deployment processes, improved ability to monitor, etc. Site Reliability Engineer at LinkedIn from September 2013 to March 2016 (2 years 7 months) in Mountain View, California. Supported LinkedIn Search from inception to completion of our project to migrate all backend systems to Galene. Established the basis for support by creating a process and template system to uniformly implement monitoring for all 30+ individual types of Search across the site. You can read more about galene here:https://engineering.linkedin.com/search/did-you-mean-galene.
