He has got his Master's degree in Business Intelligence from the University of Applied Sciences, Crete, Greece in 2007 and his Doctor's degree in Computer Science from Northeastern Illinois University in 2006.After his graduation from Northeastern Illinois University, Kopanakis started his professional career as a software engineer at Mentionlytics, a company he co-founded in 2007. He left Mentionlytics in2013 to become a professor of Business Intelligence at the University of Applied Sciences, Crete, Greece. In his teaching capacity, Kopanakis often joins the group of experts gathered at the School of Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences, where he also frequently holds talks on related topics. Kopanakis is also a visiting professor at the University of Arizona, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of British Columbia.Kopanakis has also been working on research projects in the field of computer vision and machine learning. One of these projects, entitled “Learning from descriptors in images”, is focused on developing a method to automatically generate wheel images from descriptors extracted from video frames. He also works on a project entitled “Artificial Neural Networks for Image Recognition”, which is focused on creating a new generations of artificial intelligence algorithms that can be used for image recognition tasks.Kopanakis is a member of the IEEE and the ACM. He has also won several awards, including the prestigious A.R.P. Award from the American Registry for PUBLIC COMPUTING, the Archinect Award from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, the E.S.P.S. Award from the European Society of Pattern Recognition, and the international award from the Royal Society of London.
