Quality Control Metallurgist @ LTV Steel Performed a variety of metallurgical quality control assignments in several areas of LTV's integrated steel mill facility in East Chicago, IN (currently Arcelor Mittal's Indiana Harbor - West facility). Experience in virtually all steelmaking departments at this location, including BOF melting, LMF trimming and refining, continuous slab casting, hot strip mill, annealing, finishing, tin and chrome electroplating, and hot dip galvanizing. Duties covered included claim investigation and corrective actions, FMEA, ISO 9000 compliance, review and approval of daily production data including chemistry and mechanical test properties, review of incoming orders, tracking missing or unidentified product, and some supervisory duties. While in still in my first year with the company, took the lead on a large-scale defect resolution team, eliminating one specific surface defect that had previously resulted in over $1,000,000 worth of scrapped product annually. From June 1997 to December 2001 (4 years 7 months) Metallurgical Intern @ Acme Steel Performed a variety of quality-control duties at an integrated steel mill facility, spanning 3 locations in the Chicago area. Assignments at the two Chicago locations included testing physical properties of incoming coal shipments at Acme's coke plant facility, and pig iron test reporting at Acme's blast furnace facility. Metallurgical/QC assignments at the primary facility in Riverdale included metallography (defect analysis, grain size and inclusion rating), data analysis and reporting of metal and slag chemistry, scrap reports, and various research projects. Note that this was an intern position held during the summers only. From June 1994 to August 1996 (2 years 3 months) Riverdale, ILQuality Engineer @ Smalley Steel Ring Co Quality Engineer and occasional metallurgical consultant for a mid-sized manufacturing company specializing in retaining rings, snap rings, and wave springs of various steels and specialty alloys. Responsibilities included claim investigation and resolution including corrective actions, first article approval, PPAP (FMEA/APQP, etc.) documentation, and standards compliance for a variety of automotive, aerospace, and military applications. Also responsible for managing metallurgical functions including material recommendations, testing, and alloy development. Urbana-Champaign, Illinois AreaManager of Metallurgical Services @ Wirco Inc Technical expert for a mid-sized foundry and fabrication company specializing in heat-resistant stainless and high-nickel alloy products for the heat-treat and primary metals industries. Responsibilities include developing new alloys, managing an internal A2LA-accredited chemical lab, managing all raw material procurement and usage, technical support of customer claim and internal defect investigations including metallography, improvement of foundry practices, and supervising a support staff including both technicians and laborers.
