Coward’s Litigation abilities also led him to a $240,000 settlement with a termination agency after he failed to disclose a conflict of interest. Coward’sTransaction was the only one in the history of that agency that was ever paid in full! Furthermore, his performance management skills led him to be terminated from his position at a national bank because he failed to meet customer service goals. Coward’s termination experience at the bank should serve as a warning to any company who finds themselves in a similar situation.Coward’s Employment Law experience is even more troubling. James Coward has a Juris Doctor from Michigan State University College of Law, where he played law while also completing a LL.M. in Labor and Employment Law from Wayne State University Law School. Coward then took a year off to work on his LL.M. before moving on to the simultaneous bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science from Coastal Carolina University. Coward has completed many legal development positions, most notably as an investigative reporter for The State News from 2006-2008 and as an appellate litigator with the Detroit District Court from 2009-2013. Coward is currently an associate professor at The University of Michigan Law School, where he teaches Labor and Employment Law and Immigration Law. He has been a law teacher for twenty years and has been a leader in the development of Michigan's legal system. James Coward began his legal career in 1996 as an Assistant Attorney at White & Case. He worked his way up and became a partner, specializing in labor and employment law. In 2004, James C Coward was appointed Assistant Attorney General for Labor and Employment Programs at the Department of Labor. The successful prosecution of these charges solidified James Coward's reputation as an effective litigator and prosecutor.In 2011, James C Coward was appointed to the bench of the D.C. Superior Court. He is a three-time recipient of the D.C. Bar Association's Legal Division's Pritzker Prize for Legal Excellence. Coward's bench decisions have been the subject of much commentary, most notably his decision to drop a charge against Mayor Gray in the appearances case.Since James C Coward's appointment to the bench, he has been intensifying his focus on employment law. He has issued rulings in several high-profile employment law cases, including one that challenged the legality of a company's anti-union campaign. He is also currently working on a lawsuit challenging the legality of private arbitration.In 2016, James C Coward was appointed to the bench of the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
