This position challenged the nurse to be able to work independently and the need to make confident competent decisions for the patient’s care. Flying mainly to the Middle East it also gave an insight to the culture of the Arab patient. From June 2012 to January 2014 (1 year 8 months) Staff Nurse @ Following a move from Ireland to London, Grainne’s initial job was as a staff nurse on an acute colorectal hepatobillary and gastroenterology ward. It opened her eyes to the world of private healthcare after coming from public healthcare in Ireland. Throughout the thirteen months that were spent there Grainne saw many changes including the shift into general medicine that brought with it its own challenges and this was taken as educational opportunity to learn more about the world of medicine vs surgical care. Working on a endocrinology and general medicine ward Grainne was one of the first nurses to work on the medical observation unit which became a step down for intensive care patients receiving further treatment in non-invasive ventilation and the management of uncontrolled epilepsy and other severe medical conditions. Following the six month medical placement Grainne went to a surgical unit and at the time of commencing this placement, the surgical observation unit was opening, allowing her to assist other staff with education on how observation tools within the unit worked.
