Clyde Kofman is the Chief Operating Officer of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (ULI). ULI is charged with advancing UL’s Safety Mission globally. ULI’s role is to listen and learn about emerging innovations and technologies that left unattended might pose safety concerns. Clyde joined UL in 2009 as Chief Commercial Officer, served as Chief Marketing Officer and took on the role of President of UL’s newly created Enterprise Services Business Unit, bringing with him a diverse, yet complementary skill sets that he is now leveraging to help position UL’s service offerings for the next hundred years of growth. UL is a premier global safety science company, providing a broad array of services in more than 100 countries with more than 10,000 employees worldwide.
Clyde began his career at global professional services firm Andersen LLP, where he spent 18 years in various leadership roles. During this time, he developed considerable expertise and experience in building businesses in the services sector and differentiating an organization in the marketplace through superior service delivery and relentless focus on helping clients improve their business performance.
Following his time at Andersen, Clyde spent six years in a variety of executive roles at global telecommunications equipment manufacturer Motorola. He drove strong bottom line results within an engineering-led culture where ongoing innovation and speed to market were the daily imperatives.
Throughout his career, Clyde has a proven track record of building and leading teams effectively across solid line and matrix reporting structures to successfully deliver value to customers and other stakeholders. He also enjoys serving in a mentorship role, with a keen ability to identify, cultivate and promote high-potential talent.
Chief Operating Officer @ Clyde Kofman is the Chief Operating Officer of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. His team leads and conducts research, facilitates and develops standards, educates and advocates for safety around the world and works in collaboration with governments, universities, manufacturers and retailers to enable safe living and working environments. From April 2014 to Present (1 year 9 months) President, Enterprise Services @ Clyde took on the role of President of UL’s newly created business unit, Enterprise Services, in early 2013. Enterprise Services (ES) focuses on improving the overall skills and capabilities of an organizations people. Providing education programs ranging from fundamentals up to mastery level curriculum, ES ‘s goal is to increase the competiveness of its clients workforce. As safety and compliance regulations, standards and best practices continually evolve it is critical for organizations to stay out in front, raise the overall safety IQ of the organization and build a safety conscious culture. Clyde is responsible for establishing and executing ES’s strategy, footprint and offerings designed to delight customers. From January 2013 to April 2014 (1 year 4 months) Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer @ Clyde transitioned from his role as Chief Commercial Officer to the role of Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer, where he led UL’s marketing, communications, strategy, customer advocacy and market research functions. He brounght to the role a strategic approach in which customer needs drive the development of customized, integrated solutions and service offerings.
Under his leadership, the team led the development of practice communities, which knit together discrete services from across the organization to offer comprehensive, world-class solutions within a seamless customer experience. These practices extend beyond UL’s traditional safety expertise to emerging technologies and client needs such as product sustainability, verification services, and transaction security. This approach allows UL to actively accelerate innovation in the marketplace, helping clients build marketplace trust and adoption.
By working with senior leadership across UL’s business units and regions, Clyde and his team also led the development of a cohesive strategic narrative for the company built on its mission of creating safe living and working environments for people around the globe. Central to this effort is UL’s longstanding reputation for trust, an increasingly important element in today’s rapidly changing global marketplace. From April 2012 to January 2013 (10 months) Senior Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer @ As CCO, Clyde directed a global product management team that oversees UL service offerings across eleven vertical industries, directing worldwide services strategy, industry marketing, and business development. He also led the company’s global pricing and teams, ensuring that UL’s customers received consistent, high-quality quotes and prices that are aligned with the value of services offered regardless of the country in which they are served. In addition, he led sales across all five of UL's business units, including responsibility for global account programs and channel management. Since then, UL’s revenue and net promoter score (a measure of client satisfaction) have grown by more than 50%.
Under his leadership, his teams worked to create value-added customer experiences tailored to individual manufacturer's specific needs and preferences through continuous process improvements, guided self-selection, increased collaboration and customer friendly policies. This global, cross-functional effort is in the process of being implemented and is among Clyde’s proudest achievements during his time as CCO. From January 2009 to April 2012 (3 years 4 months) Managing Principal - Strategic Mobility Services and other leadership roles @ Clyde was a leader within Motorola's Global Services organization serving three key business units: Enterprise, Government and Home/Network including four global practices: Wireless Security Services; Mobility Advisory Services; Training & Certification Services and Digital Mapping Services.
Key accomplishments included increasing Services revenue by 23%; raising win rate by 30%; reducing operating expenses by 12% through improved organizational alignment; and the introduction and monetization of five new Services offerings.
Prior to that position, Clyde served as GM and Managing Principal for Motorola Professional Services, leading the North American organization serving Government & Enterprise markets. Key accomplishments included exceeding revenue plan by 20%, order plan by 30% and earning plan by 25%.
He also served as a Client Relationship Executive for two years within the Enterprise Mobility division, closing new orders exceeding $30M. From 2002 to 2009 (7 years) Partner - Business Consulting and others @ Clyde served as a Worldwide Partner with leadership roles in Financial Services and Customer & Channel Solutions Practices.
In that role, he developed significant experience serving financial services clients, including several international engagements. His key clients included Bank of America, Citigroup, CIBC, Northern Trust, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, General Motors, Heller Financial, Ryland Mortgage, Centex Mortgage and Compass Bancshares.
As a founding member in the Financial Services Industry (FSI) Consulting Practice, he helped to grow this business annually by 20% - 30%. The FSI business contributed in excess of $1B annually to firm-wide revenue. He also led Andersen's Central Region employee retention efforts that reduced turnover by 50% and increased average tenure by 18%.
