After leaving Hanover Park Regional High School, Charles Cheng attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1991. After completing his B.S. at MIT, Charles Cheng worked as a research engineer at Kimberly-Clark in Scotts Valley, CA from 1992 to 1994. From 1995 to 1997, Charles Cheng worked as an assistant professor at SRI International in Menlo Park, CA. During his time at SRI International, Charles Cheng's main focus was forming the research team for their patent prosecution arm, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). from 1997 to 2002, Charles Cheng was the Coordinator of research at Google, where he worked on the development of their Ericsson silicon advanced processor division. From 2002 to 2004, Charles Cheng was the Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Materials Science at California Institute of Technology. In 2004, he became the Pro Vice President for Research at Samsung Electronics in South Korea.In his role at Samsung Electronics, Charles Cheng's main focus has been on mobile phone,EMS,notch and automotive technologies. Cheng has developed many of the company's products including the Galaxy S, Notebook, and Galaxy S2.
