About Antonia Nicol

📖 Summary

Local Intervention Fire Education Trainer @ Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE) LIFE is an intensive five-day course facilitated by FRS and firefighters at operational fire stations. The programme offers young people over the age of 14 the opportunity to learn new skills as well as building on existing ones. The course is based on the role of the firefighter and participants take part in a range of activities from using ladders, casualty rescue techniques, wearing breathing apparatus and first aid. In addition to this participants are given information on fire safety, prevention, consequences and healthy living. The course culminates in a pass-out parade where the young people demonstrate the skills they have learned during the week to their families and carers. The programme was introduced in Tower Hamlets in 2002 as a response to anti-social behaviour against firefighters. LIFE encourages participants to: Adopt a new set of values. Work co-operatively with others. Become self confident and gain self esteem. Improve communication skills. Success LIFE has grown to be an immensely popular scheme that now runs across 32 London boroughs. To date there have been over 500 courses run engaging with over 6000 young people. The programme receives funding from various sources, including the Jack Petchey foundation. Some of the programme's successes include: Being adopted by seven other UK fire and rescue services; also the New Zealand fire service equivalent is based on the success in London. Extensive media coverage. A visit by her Majesty the Queen. Winning a number of external awards and accolades. From January 2015 to Present (11 months) london, greater london, united kingdomFirefighter @ As a fire fighter, I am called upon to tackle various emergency situations varying from tackling fires and rescuing people to dealing with chemical spillages, Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) and people/animals trapped in precarious places. I use problem solving skills and initiative to resolve issues quickly and calmly. I possess a sensitive approach when dealing with members of the public, who may be distressed and confused. I find that my presence as a female fire fighter has been particularly well received at incidents involving rescuing young children, elderly people and women from ethnic minority backgrounds. There have been several incidents I have been involved in that the person has preferred to go with me than a male fire fighter. I am very aware of giving maximum support and comfort to all people I come into contact with. I prioritise working closely with the community to increase their level of awareness, increase their comfort at seeing and dealing with fire fighters and to help prevent incidents from occurring in the first place. I am very comfortable communicating effectively to schools, community groups, voluntary organisations and anyone from any background. I have spoken to groups of up to 100 people at a time. I have completed my EFAD course and I now drive the Fire Engine as part of my responsibilities. I have worked with the Borough team and delivered messages of Fire Safety in shopping centres and home fire safety visits for Priority one postcodes. I volunteered on my day off to assist with the Junior Citizenship programme at Lee Green and again at Bromley. In my free time, I have attended Alton College in Hampshire where I was asked whether I would drive down and speak to the young students who are studying for a Public services degree. I also work as a Volunteer Youth Engagement Trainer for LFB, assisting young people gain a nationally recognised qualification “BTEC Level 2 in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community”. From June 2011 to Present (4 years 6 months) London, United KingdomOffice Manager @ I assisted with the start up of a Consultancy Service in the property industry specialising in providing services for the management of hazardous materials, health and safety requirements and environmental issues. My duties were to set up the office from scratch including office supplies, filing systems, telephone and internet services. In addition, I arranged training courses for consultants wishing to qualify in this field. I liaised with clients and consultants on a daily basis. I provided surveys and written reports as well as invoicing for completed work. From February 2008 to October 2008 (9 months) London, United KingdomDevelopment Manager @ I supported and enabled the development of The Broadway Theatre’s artistic programme via grants, sponsorship, membership schemes and other fundraising programmes. I liaised directly with the Executive Director, Marketing Manager and Education manager to devise and manage specific bids tailored to the needs of the organisation. I co-ordinated and enabled a hugely successful commemorative concert for Dudley Moore. I created a patron scheme and got a number of celebrities to put their name towards the theatre including Penny Lancaster, Phil Jupitas and Billy Bragg. The post was on a contractual basis which ended. From September 2004 to April 2007 (2 years 8 months) Development Manager @ I was offered a position of Development Manager as maternity cover for 8 months. My duties were to fundraise for the theatre and its education department from Trusts and Foundations, Individual donors and through Corporate Sponsorship. I produced monthly financial reports from Raisers Edge database and updated the standing orders on a weekly basis. I handled all administration from the letters to sponsors, organising special events for our core funders to attend as well as fundraising proposals, contracts and sponsorship agreements. I actively managed and attended corporate sponsored events at Hampstead Theatre. These have ranged from debates through to chocolate tasting and theatre events. This was a maternity cover post From January 2004 to September 2004 (9 months) London, United KingdomCorporate Fundraising Manager @ I was offered a position with The Roundhouse Charity as their Corporate Sponsorship Manager. I raised funds for the Roundhouse’s Capital Campaign. I identified corporate sponsorship opportunities through research and followed leads generated by Roundhouse contacts and events. I built relationships with funding bodies through written communications, organised site visits, presentations and events where necessary. I researched and prepared the sponsorship proposals, collating supporting information where necessary (including cost projections, illustrations, testimonials and case studies). In addition to this, I took on the role of co-ordinating with the design and content of the website with an external design studio. From September 2001 to February 2003 (1 year 6 months) London, United KingdomEvents Manager @ After 2 years with the McKinsey recruiting department, I was asked to establish a recruiting events team. With a budget of £850k and a small team working with me, we carried out research to understand how we could broaden the appeal of McKinsey. I collated information & set out to design events that would tackle these issues. My role centred on defining the target for each event, developing the concept, setting/managing budgets & tight project management to ensure that everything ran smoothly. I was the principle consultant on the creative side: new concepts for invitations, venues, marketing materials, website design & content. We often had events running concurrently so sound project management skills & the ability to prioritise & deal with the unexpected was essential. I ran up to 50 events during the year. In our first year of operation as an events team, we had the most successful recruiting year in McKinsey history. We received feedback that this was directly attributed to the events that we ran. • Editor of recruiting newsletter. We gathered websites, articles, event news & internal stats about recruiting which was sent out internally to consultants. DATABASE IMPLEMENTATION CO-ORDINATOR - (June ’99 - Dec ’99 ) With the shift to the global candidate-tracking database in Europe, my main responsibility was to project manage the transfer of data from the old system to the new one. Ensuring appropriate testing, correct implementation & sufficient levels of training, the system was successfully rolled out across Europe. EXPERIENCED HIRE RECRUITMENT CO-ORDINATOR- (Sept ‘97 - June ’99) Moving away from traditional sources of candidates, I was part of the team responsible for attracting people from different backgrounds e.g. legal, civil, industrial & medicine. I supported the start up of the Israeli office by organising and attending a small road show in Israel where we held presentations, Q&A sessions and interviews at different universities From September 1997 to June 2001 (3 years 10 months) London, United KingdomBranch Manager @ I started off as PA to the owner and was promoted quickly to become Branch Manager with a team of 6. My responsibilities included developing and maintaining my own set of clients, which included Vodaphone, Nike, Southern Sun Hotel Group, Investec Bank and the AA. I set targets, trained and developed consultants. I managed the advertising budget, wrote and placed adverts. I handled performance appraisals and carried out exit interviews. I passed examination on Employment Law for candidates in the New South Africa and conducted career-counselling sessions for troubled applicants. I consistently outperformed my own target set by the owner and was personally responsible for 60% of the entire company’s income.
