Local Intervention Fire Education Trainer @ Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE) LIFE is an intensive five-day course facilitated by FRS and firefighters at operational fire stations. The programme offers young people over the age of 14 the opportunity to learn new skills as well as building on existing ones. The course is based on the role of the firefighter and participants take part in a range of activities from using ladders, casualty rescue techniques, wearing breathing apparatus and first aid. In addition to this participants are given information on fire safety, prevention, consequences and healthy living. The course culminates in a pass-out parade where the young people demonstrate the skills they have learned during the week to their families and carers. The programme was introduced in Tower Hamlets in 2002 as a response to anti-social behaviour against firefighters. LIFE encourages participants to: Adopt a new set of values. Work co-operatively with others. Become self confident and gain self esteem. Improve communication skills. Success LIFE has grown to be an immensely popular scheme that now runs across 32 London boroughs. To date there have been over 500 courses run engaging with over 6000 young people. The programme receives funding from various sources, including the Jack Petchey foundation. Some of the programme's successes include: Being adopted by seven other UK fire and rescue services; also the New Zealand fire service equivalent is based on the success in London. From January 2015 to Present (11 months) london, greater london, united kingdomFirefighter @ As a fire fighter, I am called upon to tackle various emergency situations varying from tackling fires and rescuing people to dealing with chemical spillages, Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) and people/animals trapped in precarious places. I use problem solving skills and initiative to resolve issues quickly and calmly. I possess a sensitive approach when dealing with members of the public, who may be distressed and confused. I find that my presence as a female fire fighter has been particularly well received at incidents involving rescuing young children, elderly people and women from ethnic minority backgrounds. There have been several incidents I have been involved in that the person has preferred to go with me than a male fire fighter. I am very aware of giving maximum support and comfort to all people I come into contact with. I prioritise working closely with the community to increase their level of awareness, increase their comfort at seeing and dealing with fire fighters and to help prevent incidents from occurring in the first place. I am very comfortable communicating effectively to schools, community groups, voluntary organisations and anyone from any background. I have spoken to groups of up to 100 people at a time. I have completed my EFAD course and I now drive the Fire Engine as part of my responsibilities. I have worked with the Borough team and delivered messages of Fire Safety in shopping centres and home fire safety visits for Priority one postcodes. I volunteered on my day off to assist with the Junior Citizenship programme at Lee Green and again at Bromley. In my free time, I have attended Alton College in Hampshire where I was asked whether I would drive down and speak to the young students who are studying for a Public services degree. I also work as a Volunteer Youth Engagement Trainer for LFB, assisting young people gain a nationally recognised qualification “BTEC Level 2 in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community”. From June 2011 to Present (4 years 6 months) London, United KingdomOffice Manager @ I assisted with the start up of a Consultancy Service in the property industry specialising in providing services for the management of hazardous materials, health and safety requirements and environmental issues. My duties were to set up the office from scratch including office supplies, filing systems, telephone and internet services. In addition, I arranged training courses for consultants wishing to qualify in this field. I liaised with clients and consultants on a daily basis. I provided surveys and written reports as well as invoicing for completed work. I handled all administration from the letters to sponsors, organising special events for our core funders to attend as well as fundraising proposals, contracts and sponsorship agreements.
