About Andy Boura

📖 Summary

I am able to rapidly comprehend complex technology and products; and articulate clearly to a target audience from a few to a few-hundred people. I have extensive experience of software development and information security throughout the development life-cycle, and at all organisational levels. This allows me to effectively bridge the gap between the technical and business functions within the organisation. I use my knowledge and experience to identify, remediate, and mitigate risks in the architecture of internally developed and third-party applications and shape the architectural security strategy of the group. I have studied Physics, some Computing, and some Psychology at undergrad level. I have also studied Physics and Business post-grad. My varied background and experience, enables me to spot and leverage opportunities, and navigate ways around challenges, in novel and pragmatic ways. This has been recognized with a number of awards for innovation and public speaking on technology and information security related subjects. On completing a Masters degree in physics, I initially worked as a software engineer, and then progressed through a number of roles, culminating as development manager. In order to see more of the organisation and work in a challenging area I transitioned into the Thomson Reuters Information Security Risk Management group.Senior Information Security Architect @ I am an advocate of enterprise and technical architecture being integrated with threat and risk modelling in order to help raise understanding of technology risks and manage them effectively within organisation at all levels. I work primarily on our flagship new and existing products; designing security in from the outset at both the architecture and application level; and then ensuring it is delivered within secure infrastructure. By managing risk throughout the product life-cycle we can ensure that a balanced approach is being taken that is matched to the risk appetite of the business. My development, science, and systems background allows me to understand the big picture and drill into the detail where required. Combined with strong communications skills this allows me to help all functions and levels within the organisation understand the nature of the risks they are exposed to. In this role I lead security reviews of many of Thomson Reuters critical systems and flagship products; and produced or contributed to many of the foundational standards on which our products and data-centre network infrastructure is built. From July 2014 to Present (1 year 6 months) Information Security Architect (initially Security Manager) @ An internal recommendation presented the opportunity to spend more time on technology challenges and see more of the organisation. Strengths in this role relate to rapidly becoming familiar with business requirements, technologies and architectures in order to ensure architectural design decisions and technology platform choices don’t introduce unacceptable security risks to the business. This is done through architectural reviews, discussion with technical subject matter experts and business and service owners, and the review of design documents. Other activities include contributing to and reviewing our technical information security policies, contributing to Information Security architectural strategy, and awareness programs. From May 2010 to July 2014 (4 years 3 months) Lead Technologist (Technical Development Manager) @ Providing technical leadership and line management of the development team for a department comprising 16 employees (2 dev team leads, 1 Q.A. team lead, 7 C++/Java SW engineers, 2 C# web developers, and 4 automated test engineers). My teams were responsible for the secure communications, and key elements of the shared software platform, used by Thomson Reuters’ transactions products; proof of concept work such as virtualisation performance testing and evaluation; and also the development, support, and administration of a large internal software development, customer support, and collaboration tool. Accountabilities included strategy and leadership of the department, line management of the development group, formulating strategy and roadmap, engaging key stakeholders, technical and managerial decision making, and development practices. Through this I ensured the roadmap was implemented and delivered to agreed quality levels and time-scales. I continually optimised and promoted practices that raised productivity while reviewing and cutting back those that did not. From October 2007 to May 2010 (2 years 8 months) Technical Team Lead and Product Owner (initially Software Engineer) @ From Marconi I went into web development at AVT, a small start-up financial trading software pioneer subsequently purchased by Reuters. Managing, specifying, developing, testing, administering, and supporting a mission critical internal and customer facing web application that improved productivity and accountability within the Transactions Sales and Trading group. In this position I delivered many improvements in processes both within the team, and through the product to the company; including establishing one of the first successful Scrum (agile development) implementations in our development group. I was also responsible for interfacing with senior management, directors and key stakeholders – finding agreement on priorities, requirements, and time-scales. My role included product management, project management, architecture, and acting as a technical and design consultant for the team. In addition I contributed expertise outside the team to colleagues in areas in which I was the subject matter expert. From March 2002 to October 2007 (5 years 8 months) Software Engineer @ Specifying, designing and implementing embedded software essential for the operation of Marconi's carrier class photonics networking equipment. I extended existing frameworks and introduced object oriented paradigms in order to improve productivity through more efficient development and improved code re-use. I also acted in a customer facing technical support role on site at our biggest customers. From 2000 to 2002 (2 years) Master of Business Administration (MBA), Business Administration and Management, General @ The Open University From 2013 to 2016 Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration, Business @ The Open University From 2013 to 2014 BSc Psychology, Psychology, 72% weighted average on completed modules @ The Open University From 2006 to 2007 Master of Physics - MPhys (hons), Physics, 2:1 @ Loughborough University From 1996 to 2000 A-Levels and GCSE's, Physics, Chemistry, Maths @ North Kesteven School From 1989 to 1996 Andy Boura is skilled in: Security, Software Development, Testing, SQL, Agile Methodologies, CISSP, Information Security Governance, Application Security, Application Design, Public Speaking, People Skills, Risk Assessment, IT Management, HTML, JavaScript
