After about a year of hard work, Android TV platform has been created and launched with Nexus Player on Nov 3, 2014. Since then many TV makers and MSO's adopted the platform for their TVs and STBs and highly successful on growing the device base From October 2013 to October 2014 (1 year 1 month) Mountain View, CAEngineering Manager @ IBEAM Broadcasting One of the project Andrew prototyped in CTO office has become full-blown engineering project. So, Andrew changed his role from an Architect to engineering manager and led the team to develop highly scalable data distribution system. Also led the effort of building platform independent streaming library for building iBEAM's content distribution/re-direction infrastructure. From July 2000 to August 2001 (1 year 2 months) Sunnyvale, CAEngineering Director, YouTube TV @ YouTube Founding member of the project and head of Engineering. Joined YouTube in 2014, and built the team from scratch, to later became 4 distinct sub teams with layers of management structure underneath, including client team who's responsible for Android/iOS/Web/TV apps, platform team for handling all of the meta-data processing, business logic, ads / measurement / reporting / internal operation tooling, search & discovery team who handles all the data processing, indexing, ranking, ML pipeline for personalized recommendations, and lastly Linear team who's responsible for building and deploying H/W infrastructure for capturing live TV signal for all of the cable TV channels and local channels in 100+ market.It was a significant investment from Google(~1 billion USD) to build it to innovate the way how we watch TV, and highly praised from the market for its product features and experience. Since initial launch in April 2017, service has been expanded up to top 100 markets in 2018, covering more than 85% of population in US. Team is continue marching towards nationwide coverage, and bringing more innovation to the service. From October 2014 to December 2018 (4 years 3 months) San Bruno, CaliforniaStaff Software Engineer @ Google Andrew joined Google Inc as a founding member of TV ads team, which was Google's attempt to penetrate TV advertising market. It was moderately successful but wasn't scalable, therefore, Andrew pivoted to TV search, and then founded a project to build a common billing and payment solution for SaaS (Software as a service) products at Google. And successfully launched it for Google AppEngine, Google Voice, Google Apps Premier edition, Google storage and etc.In June 2009, he got an expatriate assignment to Google's Seoul R&D center and initiated a few impactful projects targeting the mobile industry. One of which was Google maps transit navigation feature launched in 440 cities in the world. After that, in 2010, Andrew joined back to TV related project at Google, a.k.a Google TV, and built a platform engineering team in Seoul From July 2006 to June 2009 (3 years) Kirkland, WA / Seoul, KoreaSenior Software Architect @ IBEAM Broadcasting Designed and implemented iSFC(iBEAM Streaming Foundation Library), which was multi-platform streaming, traffic load balancing library that runs on various platform including windows, AIX, BSD Linux, Unix and Windows CE. This solution became the "model" of modern online video streaming traffic redirection / load-balancing methodology for CDNs across the globe (Many CDN licensed iBeam patents and S/W). Later, even Google adopted the idea of satellite based streaming distribution as a part of its global data network as well. From July 1999 to July 2000 (1 year 1 month) Sunnyvale, CASoftware Architect, Hired gun @ Phantagram Limited Designed and implemented a network game server system similar to Battle.Net from Blizzard. It was the first ever home-grown network game server system developed in Korea, which was scalable up to 50K concurrent users per server, and deployed in Korea and Mesa, Arizona, Phantagram's US branch.It was started as a favor to CEO of Phatagram, who is Andrew's college classmate, asked Andrew to come over and help him out. Whole project completed in one year since inception, then Andrew moved on to iBEAM broadcasting which served Andrew's vision better. From March 1998 to February 1999 (1 year) Seoul, Korea / Mesa, ArizonaEngineering Manager/Architect @ Hanmesoft corp Hanmesoft acquired ESTsoft for about two years (splitted again later). During that time, Andrew took an a SI project for public franchise restaurant called COCO's Korea (total of 44 restaurants and two factories). Andrew has built a team, executed, and finally delivered solution consists of 5,000 pages of documents and 200,000 lines of code runs across more than 60 machines in the private network between office, factory and branch stores.The system consisted of order entry/dispatch management, production management (MRP), prime cost management, EIS system, warehouse management, inventory management, etc.All of those traditional IT system concept was new to Andrew, but he studied all of the required concept quickly through several books in a few months, and then designed and implemented the whole system with his team in just a short of 1.5 years, and deployed at newly built factory in Jinchun, Korea. It was industry's first implementation of fluid video-on-demand service on a cable network with advanced set-top box, and commercially deployed in several cable operators in US including Charter communication. Later on, serving "VOD library" as a extra service on a PayTV operator STB became a "standard" in US and across the globe. From August 2001 to July 2006 (5 years) Palo Alto, CA / Kirkland, WACo-founder, VP Engineering @ ESTsoft Corp Co-founded 4 people programming team with his passionate college mates during 2nd ~ 3rd year of college, came up with an idea of developing a "word processor" without even knowing anything about C/C++ programming 😝. However, he studied everything necessary to achieve it and finally built it in 1.5 years of absolute dedication, and named it as "21th century word processor". It was first distributed as public domain version through online BBS (dial up modem based online forum before Internet was born), and became hugely popular in Korea, downloaded more than 500K times in one month.Team got encouraged by huge response, and decided to commercialize it, so they founded ESTsoft Corporation, and after further development, commercial version of the word processor were launched and produced revenue to build the company.21th century word is remembered as a "passionate challenger" built by young group of talented programmers against Hangul word processor which dominated Korean market, with its innovative multiple document editing via virtual memory management, vector font based editing features.This project served Andrew to be able to master all of the computer science basics covering X86 CPU architecture, peripheral management, graphics, memory / file management, data structure and overall S/W design, development, debugging, release process, and became the basis for Andrew to grow into industry leading S/W architect.Later on, ESTSoft went public in Korea, and has been continuously growing (http://www.estsoft.com).Andrew still provides consultation to ESTSoft as it is the first company he founded. From February 1991 to June 1994 (3 years 5 months) Seoul, KoreaEngineering Director, New Mobility & Incubation Lab @ Uber Head of S/W engineering teams for New Mobility initiatives including Jump bike, Scooter, and other lightweight vehicles, as well as Uber Incubation lab (similar to Google X). Incubation lab gave birth to "Uber Transit" and "Uber Works" (announced on 10/3/2019), and also a few other innovative stealth projects in incubation stage.However, due to pandemic, Uber had to scale down incubation lab, and Jump Inc has been sold to Lime in April 2020, which resulted in laying off majority of Jump team. After considering the choices given to Andrew, whether to work on something else at Uber, or pivot away from Transportation business.
