El Museo Picasso Málaga responde al deseo de Pablo Picasso de que su obra estuviera presente en la ciudad en que nació el 25 de octubre de 1881. Su creación se debe a la voluntad compartida de Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, nuera y nieto del artista, cuyas donaciones son el núcleo de las 233 obras de Pablo Picasso que constituyen los fondos del Museo, así como de la Junta de Andalucía, que articuló un gran proyecto museístico consagrado al artista cuyos estilos y técnicas cambiaron el curso del arte moderno. La Colección del Museo Picasso Málaga da cuenta de casi ocho décadas de trabajo de Pablo Picasso y transmite el rigor y la capacidad creativa de un artista imprescindible para comprender la historia del arte occidental. La nueva distribución que luce el museo desde el 1 de junio de 2020 debe su particularidad a una innovadora disposición escenográfica en los espacios museísticos. Se trata de 44 pinturas, 49 dibujos, 40 obras gráficas, 10 esculturas, 17 cerámicas, 1 tapiz y 1 plancha de linóleo. Así, entre las 233 obras propias del Museo Picasso Málaga y estas 162 de la Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA), la colección cuenta con casi cuatrocientas obras de Pablo Picasso fechadas entre 1894 y 1972, de las cuales 120 obras se exponen en el Palacio de Buenavista. Las obras expuestas, conforman una narración expositiva que comienza por los años de formación y transcurre por los momentos más representativos de la trayectoria del artista. El Museo Picasso Málaga tiene su sede en el Palacio de Buenavista. Situado en pleno centro histórico de la ciudad, es un magnífico ejemplo de la arquitectura andaluza del siglo XVI, en el que se mezclan los elementos renacentistas y mudéjares.
