The Ukrainian Library Association -- a nongovernmental professional association with individual membership -- was founded in 1995 and registered at the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. It is a national association, which represents about 50,000 library workers across the country and more than 40,000 libraries. ULA members work in public, college, university, school and special libraries. Now it has 20 regional and special chapters in all regions of Ukraine and sections according to branches of library and information science and librarianship. The Association - supporting the process of democratization in Ukraine - strives to be the chief advocate for the people of Ukraine to achieve and maintain high-quality library and information services (by protecting the right to read, educating librarians, improving library services, and making information available to everyone). It contributes towards guaranteeing free access to information and intellectual freedom, and promotes public awareness of this field. The Ukrainian Library Association works on strengthening and developing the library profession, and library and information science education.
