Treatment Research Institute

The Treatment Research Institute (TRI) was founded in 1992 by A. Thomas McLellan, PhD, with a core mission to engineer and translate research to improve substance use disorder policies and programs. The research team is deeply committed to finding practical, science-based solutions to addressing an array of addictions-related public health problems. TRI works to drive the kind of transformative change that is so deeply needed in this field. In order to effect the change that is needed, TRI works with families, schools, healthcare systems, courts and policy-makers to ensure that our research aligns with then needs of those most affected by substance use disorders. TRI has been singularly focused on translating research into action, and bridging the chasm to create impact.TRI merged into Public Health Management Corporation’s Research & Evaluation Group in July, 2017. PHMC’s R&E Group is dedicated to improving the health of communities through applied, community-based research and rigorous program evaluation designed to inform best practices in the public health and education arenas. Over the past 40 years, PHMC’s R&E Group has approached its work through a health equity lens, with a focus on team-based science and the need for cross-disciplinary perspectives to solve today’s most pressing public health, education and social problems. With TRI scientists joining PHMC, PHMC expands its expertise in a critical area in public health – applying research to improve substance use disorder policies and programs.
