The Movement for One Liberia is an accredited Political Party lead by Former Presidential Candidate, MacDella Cooper, to push more women, the youth, people living with disabilities and orientation into public office. The mission of the Movement for One Liberia is to provide democratic rights and civil liberties to every Liberian; especially, the under-represented: women, youth, disabled, and those with dissimilar orientation. Why Women’s Representation MattersMessage 1: The low numbers of women in Liberian politics is unfair and undemocratic.Democracy is a type of rule “of, by, and for the people” – but who are the people? Half of Liberia’s population are women…but women are less than 11% of the national legislature – there are now just 10 women and 90 men. That’s not fair and it’s not democratic. Women must be fairly represented in the legislature. Message 2: Women and men are different; the inclusion of women’s voices makes laws and policies more responsive to the needs of women and strengthens the quality of the decisions.Women and men are different; they have different roles and responsibilities in the home and society. This means they have different needs and different knowledge and ideas about what problems need to be fixed and how so Liberia can shine. We need both men and women in politics so we can see all sides of the issues. Also, laws and policies that promote women’s health, protection, and equality will not be passed if women aren’t there to push for them.
