Scudamore’s is the original Cambridge punting company and founder of pleasure punting to the College Backs and the Upper River in the early 20th Century. Jack Scudamore, the Cambridge born founder, set up his boatyard to build and hire boats on return from serving in the Boer War. As the fashion for punting began to emerge on the Thames he took the opportunity to introduce the new activity to Cambridge. Jack Scudamore hired boats to Cambridge University students and local residents, forming strong relationships with many of his now legendary customers. By the early 1920s punting had overtaken every other boating activity in Cambridge and was the height of romantic fashion, inspiring many famous poets. Today, the number one activity in Cambridge is punting with many choosing to enjoy time on the river, following in the wake of many of society’s greats.
