This is of great importance, in order to develop open and resilient societies, knowledge on institutions and their impact on social outcomes such as inequality, prosperity, social mobility, innovation and democracy is needed. We go beyond the existing academic frameworksScience will play a key role in the search for smart and sustainable solutions to social issues. At Utrecht University, we are committed to help solve pressing challenges that society faces today and tomorrow. Our priority is making societies more open and resilient. Such an extensive and complex mission requires an interdisciplinary approach to tackle it. By combining the expertise from various disciplines and faculties we identify key issues, and try and offer the multidimensional answers that are needed in the face of the questions that surround societies today. We are convinced that fruitful and sustainable answers can only be found as we go beyond the existing academic frameworks. Innovation, new insights and social impact require cooperation not only between scientific disciplines but also with knowledge and know-how from professionals outside the scientific field. To reinforce such a statement we are proud to present 5 focal points of research where we take this important step: IOS-Hubs.The IOS-Hubs, selected due to their major impact on our society, are: Future of Work, Future of Citizen-based Initiatives, Security in Open Societies, Entrepreneurship for Social Challenges, and Gender & Diversity.
