Our mission is "Advancing Veteran and public health through innovative research," which we address by supporting research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The range of research activities is described in the research section of our website at www.pavir.org and represents the vast majority of our activities.PAVIR is the second largest of 82 active VA affiliated not for profits, based on the legal authority of Title 38 UCS §7361-7366, which authorizes VA medical centers to establish nonprofit research and education corporations to accept and administer private and non-VA federal funds in support of VA’s research and education missions. The congressional intent in enabling these corporations is to provide VA facilities with a flexible funding mechanism for the conduct of research as well as staff and patient education.PAVIR is aware of its responsibility to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct and practice in relation to its research and research administration activities. PAVIR has a Code of Ethics that presents standards of behavior to which staff should aspire and is based on our CREDO, representing our five key values:• Creativity and Innovation• Ethical Standards• Excellence - Results• Compliance• Financial StewardshipAs of March 2017, PAVIR employs 231 staff, most of whom directly work on 170 research projects aimed at improving health care. Most of PAVIR's projects are funded by NIH and DoD, but we also administer studies supported by state and other funding sources, as well as industry and donations. PAVIR’s core administration offices provide services including:• Contracts & Grants administration, both pre- and post-award• Finance and Accounting• Purchasing• Human ResourcesThe VA Palo Alto produces some of the highest quality research in the Federal System, and PAVIR is viewed by its investigators as a vital partner. Prior to July 1, 2014, we operated under the name of Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education (PAIRE).
