Myrias Research Corporation was founded to provide expandable, high performance parallel computers to meet the needs of the numerical computing community. The Myrias product was intended to be the performance leader for a wide range of economically and strategically important applications. From the beginning in 1983 the Myrias system was designed to be a practical, easy to use, parallel supercomputer. In 1984, the software foundations were laid with the development and refinement of process scheduling and memory management algorithms. A 512-processor prototype was in operation late in 1986. During 1987, as testing and refinement of system software continued, design of production hardware began, with the goals of speed, manufacturability and reliability. In April 1989 the first SPS-2 was shipped, and 7 further machines were delivered in 1989 and 1990. In December 1989 a 1044-processor system was assembled with 4.3 GB of memory ; the system achieved peak rates of 630 Mflops and 2400 Mips. In September of 1990 Myrias shipped its first SPS-3 system based on the brand new 68040 processor from Motorola. Soon afterwards the company acknowledged insuperable financial difficulties, and ceased operations. SEE ALSO: LinkedIn Group "Myrias Research Corporation Alumni"
