Metro Vancouver

Metro Vancouver is a federation of 21 municipalities, one Electoral Area and one Treaty First Nation that collaboratively plans for and delivers regional-scale services. Its core services are drinking water, wastewater treatment and solid waste management. Metro Vancouver also regulates air quality, plans for urban growth, manages a regional parks system and provides affordable housing. The regional district is governed by a Board of Directors of elected officials from each local authority.In collaboration with our members, Metro Vancouver has three broad roles.DELIVER CORE SERVICESProvide core utility services (water, sewerage and drainage, and solid waste management) to members. Provide regional parks and affordable housing directly to residents.PLAN FOR THE FUTURECarry out planning and regulatory responsibilities related to the three utilities as well as air quality, regional growth, and regional parks. At the board level, develop and implement strategies related to issues of regional interest.POLITICAL FORUMServe as the main political forum for discussion of significant community issues at the regional level.Governance StructureMetro Vancouver is a political body and corporate entity operating under provincial legislation as a ‘regional district’ and ‘greater boards’ that deliver regional services, policy and political leadership on behalf of 23 members.
