The John Wayne Cancer Institute at Providence Saint John's Health Center is a cancer research institute dedicated to the understanding, diagnosis, and innovative treatment of cancer in order to eliminate patient suffering and prolong survival. The Institute was founded in 1981 by the family in memory of John Wayne, who dedicated himself to finding a cure for cancer after suffering lung cancer, and ultimately dying of stomach cancer in 1979.Through continual innovation in clinical and translational laboratory research, The John Wayne Cancer Institute is developing and testing new forms of diagnosis and therapy to improve the quality of life and expected survival of those afflicted with cancer.The institute and clinics are comprised of nine centers of excellence:- Urology and Urologic Oncology- Melanoma, Skin, Soft Tissue Tumors, and Immunotherapy- Endocrine Tumors, Disorders, and Bone Disease- Breast Surgery and Oncology- Minimally Invasive Chest Surgery and Thoracic Surgical Oncology- Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Tumors- Gynecologic Oncology- Translational Lab Research- Brain Tumors and Neuroscience JWCI also offers cancer survivorship support and a comprehensive set of highly respected postdoctoral training programs, ranging from its ACGME-approved Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship, to its clinically oriented Urologic Oncology and Neurosurgical Fellowship. As well as a lab-based Molecular Oncology fellowship.
