Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s No.1 Container Port that handles country’s 55% of total major ports container capacity, has evolved from a bulk cargo terminal in May 1989 to transpire now as the country’s premiere port with having handled 4.49 Million TEUs in FY 2015-16. The Port has three dedicated Container terminals viz., Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT), Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) and Gateway Terminals India (GTI). Further, JN Port has a twin berth liquid cargo jetty developed by M/S Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and IOC Limited on BOT basis for handling liquid cargo including POL products. The Port has a great connectivity to 50 Inland Container Depots across the country with connecting more than 30 Container Freight Stations and full-fledge Custom House. JNPT is fast building its infrastructure capabilities and implementing the Government inclined ‘Ease of Doing Business’ initiatives to enable a business-friendly environment for the EXIM traders and thereby achieve its ambitious plan to handle 10 Million TEUs capacity by 2022. JNPT throws open an array of worthwhile opportunities for the maritime trade, including the shipping lines and shippers, to ferry their cargo to various sectors across the globe. The Port has the widest reach among the ports in India, and connects to over 300 ports in the world. JNPT is in process of creating the 4th Container Terminal which will have an investment of Rs 7915 crore by an SPV of Port of Singapore Authority and BMCTPL to develop 2 km of jetty. The Port has been deepening the harbor channel from 14 mtrs to 15 mtrs to cater bigger vessels. The other major plans include- developing one Satellite Port at Vadhavan, in Dahanu, and to build 2 Dry Ports- one each in Wardha (Vidarbha region) and Jalna (Marathwada region).
