Information and Forschung (research): This is what the ifo Institute has stood for since its foundation in January 1949. It is one of the leading and in the media most often cited economic research institutes in Europe. It has the status of an “Institute at the University of Munich” and - through the CESifo Group - cooperates closely with the Center for Economic Studies (CES) at the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich as well as with the CESifo GmbH. The CESifo Research Network comprises more than 1100 economist from all over the world.
The ifo Institute is a European think tank that forms a bridge between academic re-search and public discourse. It focuses on applied economic research with clear po-licy implications with a view to achieving greater stability, prosperity and cohesion for Europe and the world. Ifo's research is increasingly focused on European and global issues. It strives to comply with the highest scientific standards and aims to play a policy advisory role and contribute to policy debate. With regard to its economic research, the Ifo institute is strongly dedicated to training highly qualified young academics. In its doctoral training programme the ifo institute collaborates closely with the LMU.
ifo's research is closely linked to the Institute's services for researchers and the general public. This particularly includes business surveys, which form the basis of the internationally widely recognized Business Climate Index, as well as the Database for Institutional Comparisons (DICE).
The ifo Institute is managed by the Executive Board, consisting of a president (Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Clemens Fuest) and a managing director (Prof. Meinhard Knoche). In accordance with its main focus, its research, policy advisory and service tasks are carried out by eight ifo Centers.
ifo also has a subsidiary in Dresden, which works closely together with the Technical University of Dresden, especially in the area of doctoral training.
