About Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR)

Any institution bearing the name of the great universal scholar Hermann von Helmholtz has a responsibility to conduct research that will improve the foundations upon which our lives depend. As far back as the 19th century, Helmholtz pursued a research approach that built bridges between physics, chemistry and medicine – three disciplines that characterize the work of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf to this day. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, the largest science organization in Germany, our scientists conduct research on topics drawn from the fields of energy, health and matter which are vital for ourmodern-day industrial society.HZDR’s eight institutes are the scientific home of approximately 1,100 members of staff, who work on research projects ranging from discovering basic principles in the natural sciences to generating ideas for new products and innovations. Our center thus continues to be inspired by Hermann von Helmholtz, whose groundbreaking work in research and development was based on theory, experiments, and practice.
