Granit was created in 1996 in the family Jorméus home at the kitchen table. The friends Susanne Liljenberg and Anett Jorméus where frustrated by the mess of all their loose documents and papers, and also by how very few cleaver gadgets there were to help organize at home. Too much time was spent sorting in order to get track of life.
With many years experience in the fashion industry, both of them were constantly thinking about how they could simplify their lives. They felt the lack of an Interior design shop that breathed peace, simplicity and harmony, both in appearance and range. The feeling that other people were also in need of simplicity in life as well as functional storage became the basis for a business idea and the concept began to take shape. They started their dream business and it was named Granit.
The key for Granit was to offer an experience that was greatly influenced by "aesthetic function". The basis was basic storage that should be durable and easy to complement. To exclude bright colours in favour of grey, black and white felt obvious. Also, all goods sholud have a real function - no unnecessary knick knacks. Even today, storage is the major part of the product range, but the assortment has expanden to include product groups such as Kitchen, Bath, Clothing as well as smart furniture, lamps and fabrics. The aesthetic function is still valid for the whole concept. The first store opened on Götgatan 31 in Stockholm in May 1997. The story of Granit is an exciting story about two women without a penny in their pocket, but with a tremendous drive and strong belief in their mission, succeeded in building one of Swedens and the Nordic regions most interesting and distinct retail concepts.
Since 2009 Granit is owned by the Bergendahl Group, an expansive and very successful company within the grocery and retail sectors with stores in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Poland.
