FWCBC was borne of a few ‘older’ immigrants’ desire to reach out to others, particularly those who are ineligible to access regular Canadian services.
REAL INCLUSIVITY
The people who dreamed up the FWCBC mostly came from non-profit, settlement and social service frontline jobs, who knew from experience that not everyone who approached these service agencies get helped. These previous immigrants have gone through the same challenges and hardships that every newcomer to a foreign country had to deal with. Part of the service component of the Foreign Workers of Canada Cooperative is to retrieve those who have fallen through the cracks and prop them up. The Cooperative is inclusive. Its membership is not limited to immigrants alone. It also welcomes all other newcomers, whether they’re refugees, students, temporary workers or visitors.
RECIPROCAL ADVANTAGES
Armed with the Filipino culture’s bayanihan spirit, the founders gathered their friends together to form a cooperative to help each other for reciprocal advantages: Easier adaptation for newcomers, and a sense of fulfillment for the old-timers. And for everybody, a general feeling of belonging to a huge, supportive community. Everyone brought to the mix as well, a strong desire to learn from each other.
NOT JUST ONE HERO
FWCBC is not a brainchild of just one person, but of a group wanting to help and be helped, and to pay things forward. FWCBC’s is not a passive membership. It’s a group of people who are explorers and discoverers, and who are passionate about sharing their God-given talents and love for others.
There is no individual hero at Foreign Workers of Canada Cooperative - every member is.
