Field Band Foundation

The Field Band Foundation is a non-profit South African company that operates more than 40 "show bands" across disadvantaged areas in all provinces as a highly effective method of inculcating positive lifeskills, and targeted practical teachings, along with HIV and Aids peer education, and general education in social development. Interaction between children from different racial, linguistic and cultural groups, and cross-regionally, is facilitated through regional and national Foundation gatherings and competitions, and through managing the challenges associated with the broad diversity of the student intake of almost 6 000 youngsters a year. Operating excellent governance structures and presenting unqualified financial audits in every year, the Foundation's chairman is Brian Gibson, and its CEO is Nicky du Plessis. However, the contextual reality in which many of the Field Band members live is often stark: material deprivation, single-parent households, unemployment, high levels of lawlessness and unhealthy living conditions. Those resultant feelings of hopelessness are the root cause for the Field Band Foundation’s existence. Everything undertaken by the Foundation is targeted at providing realistic, achievable, practical, long-term upliftment to young people in the areas in which we operate. Informed by the daily experiences of members, and alive to immediate challenges that they face, the Foundation provides various social development support functions that are integrated into the operations department. The Foundation's board of directors identifies the company's stakeholders as being government and regulators, employees, direct beneficiaries, operational leadership, Academy students, donors, local and international partners, suppliers, operations-linked communities, partnering state departments, and civil society.
