The European Sustainable Development Network (ESDN) is the biggest network of public administrators and experts dealing with sustainable development (SD) strategies in Europe. The network was established in 2002 when public administrators in charge of national sustainable development strategies from several EU Member States met for the first time for a workshop-like exchange of experiences. Since then, the network has expanded to include policy makers, scientists and practitioners from over 30 countries in Europe and beyond. It has recently become a formal association. As a network of mainly public servants and policy makers, the ESDN facilitates an active exchange of ideas and best practices to make sustainable development strategies and policies more effective. Networking opportunities arise through events as well as publications and newsletters. The ESDN Office, located at the Institute for Managing Sustainability at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, manages the network. The activities of the ESDN are guided by the ESDN Advisory Board consistent of public servants in the governments of nine European countries: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Romania, and Switzerland.
