Erie County is located on the western border of New York State along Lake Erie, part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Area. With almost one million residents, the county covers 1,058 square miles and consists of three cities and 25 town governments.
Erie County is governed under a "home rule" charter which separates legislative and executive functions. County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz, elected to a four-year term, is the chief executive officer of the county. The County Legislature is the county's governing body, consisting of 11 members elected to two-year terms. Other elected positions are Comptroller, Clerk, District Attorney, and Sheriff.
Erie County government employs over 5,600 individuals and has an annual budget of $1.45 billion. Erie County administers vital public services, provides law enforcement and maintains public infrastructure for its roughly one million residents. The Erie County Executive is Mark C. Poloncarz, who took office in January 2012.
