All individuals have an inherent right to equality, dignity, safety, respect and their basic human rights regardless of age, race, class, gender, sexual orientation, sub-culture, gender identity, abilities and religion or any other distinguishing characteristics. This is something most anyone can agree upon, so it only stands to reason that each of these individuals also deserve these rights regardless of their status as an addict. We have known for years that addiction is a disease of the mind and the body, not merely an issue of self-will and self-control. If addiction is the disease, then the addict is the afflicted. Coming in all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life, every individual deserves a chance to heal, a chance at a new life, a chance at recovery. Change is voluntary and we believe that consistent service, unconditional acceptance, and healthy relationships are imperative in developing a trusting rapport with addicts. Many of us are recovered addicts ourselves, championing the cause with an intermingling of health professionals that have made it their mission as well. This is the key aspect to Peer Accountability, or Peer Recovery. The ideals of recovery stick when taught from a similarly afflicted individual, one that has seen both sides of the road, and chosen the side of recovery. It is only through this kind of relationship, that a healthier lifestyle can begin to develop in those afflicted with addiction; a relationship of trust, honesty, and acceptance should be modeled at all times. Eagle Peer Recovery has been established at the University of North Texas for one simple purpose: To provide an environment of education and accountability in terms of addiction and long-term recovery. Through multi-faceted recovery meetings (12-step, HBE, SMART Recovery, PESN) and peer advocate training, E.P.R. aims to create a safe-haven for students either in or seeking active recovery, instead of active addiction.
