Named for Cumberland County in England, it originally extended to Pennsylvania's western limits. Currently, the county lies within the Cumberland Valley adjoining to the Susquehanna River at its eastern border. With a population of just over 250,000 people based on the 2017 Pennsylvania State Data Center report, it is the fastest growing county within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.The county houses six higher education institutions, eight public libraries, three hospitals, two military operations, and much more.
