Rauma - Sea and World Culture Rauma and the sea are inseparables. The traditions insinuate to trading relations between the coastal countries of the Baltic Sea over thousands of years. The community slowly developed at the end of the Middle Ages. The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in the 14th century and the Franciscan monastery was founded, and thus Rauma became the commercial and religious center of the district. On 17.4.1442 knight Karl Knutsson ratified in the name of his master King Kristoffer the trading rights for the tradesmen of Rauma and all the same advantages of law and order as the tradesmen of Turku had. The signing day of this privilege letter granting the town rights for Rauma is considered to be the foundation day of the town. Rauma is the third oldest town in Finland (Turku 1280 = the Cathedral, Porvoo 1346, Ulvila 1365!, Naantali 1443). The biggest employers of Rauma are the town of Rauma (abt. 3200 employees), the paper mill of UPM , Oras armature factory and the forwarding agency of Euroports. Additionally can be mentioned MetsäFibre Pulp Mill and the Rolls-Royce as a propulsion products manufacture. Seaside Industry Park Rauma is an industrial park for heavy industry, located on the site where the shipyard previously operated. The industrial area offers companies an effective operating environment in which to carry out business that is both sustainable and profitable. The seafaring has always been the livelyhood of Rauma people. The port is even today an important employer. In 2015 the total traffic of the port was altogether 5,7 million tons. The most important export products were paper and cardboard, pulp and versatile case goods. The most important import products were round wood, chemicals, and case goods.
