Located in northern Arizona, on the shores of magnificent Lake Powell, Page offers a unique blend of hometown hospitality, and outstanding recreation. Page is nestled in the far northern part of Coconino County, Arizona, just below the Utah border. It is close to myriad national parks, in the heart of canyon country and adjacent to the Navajo Nation on the Colorado Plateau. Page was named after John C. Page, a 1930’s Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner. It began in 1957, as a housing camp for persons constructing the Glen Canyon Dam (which later created Lake Powell from the Colorado River), then incorporated as a city in 1975.Page sits at an elevation of 4,300 feet, atop Manson Mesa and overlooking Wahweap Bay of Lake Powell (with 1,960 miles of shoreline, 96 major canyons, and Rainbow Bridge National Monument). Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell now provide water storage and hydroelectric power generation for many Southwestern states; they also serve as a major recreational area that is visited by more than three million people annually.Persons from many countries come to see the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (which is operated by the United States Department of the Interior). Main highways leading into Page are State Route 98 and US Route 89. Page Municipal Airport has a lighted, paved 5,499-foot runway, in addition to a 2,200-foot gravel runway and offers flights to Phoenix, as well as charter services. Page boasts numerous hotels/motels, RV parks and campgrounds. The nearest major cities are Phoenix and Tucson, which are 282 and 393 miles away, respectively. The Navajo Generating Station is an important employer for Page, assuring year-round stability beyond the tourist season.Weather in Page is mild, with an average annual maximum temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, an average minimum temperature of 47 degrees, and average precipitation at six and one-half inches.
