Central Queens Academy Charter School

Central Queens Academy Charter School is a small, tuition-free, public middle school serving New York City School District 24 with two campuses in Elmhurst and Glendale. CQA was founded in 2012 with an interest in improving academic and life outcomes for English Language Learners and recent immigrant populations. Our scholars primarily live in the Corona, Elmhurst and Woodside neighborhoods - some of the most overcrowded and diverse in New York City. Currently, we serve 400 scholars in grades five through eight who represent nearly 30 different nations from around the world. About 90% of our scholars are from low-income households and 80% would be the first in their family to graduate from college. With a focus on college preparation and career readiness, we strive to prepare 100% of scholars for college success. We offer a longer school day and school year than most public middle schools, as well as after-school programs. CQA staff have an opportunity to be a part of developing compassionate global stewards and life-long readers and learners in a progressive environment in the context of supportive, grateful and appreciative families who are excited to collaborate; colleagues who are devoted to their practice, their scholars, and the school mission; and a leadership team dedicated to supporting professional growth by providing feedback and support. The hard work of our students and faculty have produced proven success. For five consecutive years CQA’s scholars have outperformed their city, state and home district peers on the New York State mathematics and English Language Arts exams. CQA was also named a Reward School by New York State Education Department twice, a distinction awarded to only the top 5% of public schools statewide.
