The mission of the Birmingham Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra (BBSO) is to offer the transformative experience of live music. With four subscription concerts each season and a robust educational initiative entitled "Passing Notes," The BBSO strives to cultivate interest in the musical arts for the entire family with emphasis on educational growth. Since its inception in 1975, the Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra, now under the music direction of John Thomas Dodson, has continued to serve the Detroit Metropolitan Area by presenting outstanding performances designed to please a wide range of musical tastes. The BBSO has received the Detroit Motor City Award for "Most Outstanding Community Orchestra in Southeastern Michigan" 12 times. No other community orchestra has reached this recognition level. The BBSO’s reputation has been formed not only by its artistic excellence and programming, but also for its commitment to serving area youth through education and outreach. The orchestra takes its responsibility for promoting arts education seriously. For years, BBSO musicians have made in-school visits for coaching and master class instruction to students in middle and high school. The orchestra also shares the stage with high school groups in education concerts. Both outlets supplement students’ curriculum in ways that promote their active participation in music making.
