WHO WE ARE The Afro Students' Association (ASA) is a non-profit organization at the University of Calgary. It was founded in 2007 by a group of students who were concerned with the lack of representation of African, Caribbean, and Afro-Canadian students at the University. The ASA has since grown to include over 150 members, and is now one of the most active clubs on the University of Calgary campus. OUR MISSION The primary goal of the Afro Students' Association is to promote awareness of current issues affecting all Afro people in the Diaspora, to showcase the vast African, Caribbean and Afro Canadian cultures, and foster unity and friendships amongst all Afro people in the University of Calgary and Canada. We also place a huge emphasis on being active in the greater community, and giving back to the community. OUR WORK The Afro Students' Association places a major emphasis on fundraising for and bringing awareness to causes we are passionate about. Since 2007, we have hosted over 40 events including a fashion show/concert, multiple talent showcases, open forum debates and discussions, bake sales, a bachelor auction, wings/games nights, and much more. From these events we have raised over $1,500 dollars for various causes, including the Canadian Red Cross for Haiti, Africa Book Project, the Calgary Bridge Foundation, and Hope Ethiopia.
