De eerste jaren
Op 12 augustus 1896 wordt in Tilburg een voetbalclub opgericht door Gerard de Ruiter, stagiair bij de NS-hoofdwerkplaats in Tilburg. Omdat hij van voetbal houdt, maar Brabant nog niet erg bekend is met deze sport zoekt hij een groep van 12 mannen bij elkaar. Zij vormen de nieuwe voetbalclub Tilburgia. Na anderhalf jaar wordt de naam gewijzigd in Willem II, naar de voormalige Koning Willem II, die zijn militair hoofdkwartier had gevestigd in Tilburg en die ook in de stad overleed.
Hoewel er in de eerste jaren vooral sprake was van een gezelligheidsvereniging, was Willem II aangesloten bij de Brabantse Voetbalbond. In 1904 treedt de club ook toe tot de Nederlandse voetbalbond
