De Vereniging van Vlaamse Steden en Gemeenten vzw is de ledenorganisatie van alle Vlaamse gemeenten, OCMW's, afvalintercommunales (Interafval) en intercommunales voor streekontwikkeling (Vlinter). Ze telt als leden ook bijna alle politiezones en tal van andere intercommunale verbanden.
Zij zet zich in voor zowel de politieke mandatarissen als ambtenaren. Als representatieve gesprekspartner komt zij op voor de belangen van de lokale besturen ten aanzien van andere overheden en derden.
De VVSG organiseert zich rond drie kerntaken:
- Ondersteuning & dienstverlening (informatie, advies, vorming en andere dienstverlening) aan de leden
- Belangenbehartiging
- De VVSG als beweging van de eerstelijnsoverheid en netwerkorganisatie
