Assisting adult immigrants to move up the economic ladder through education and professional development support. | Upward Scholars is the only nonprofit in the Bay Area providing academic, career development, and financial support to adult immigrants from low-income backgrounds transitioning from adult schools to community colleges. Through continued education, students move from low-wage occupations into middle-wage occupations, start their own businesses, earn certificates in areas such as medical assisting or bookkeeping, or go on to earn associate degrees and transfer to four-year universities. What we provide: • Textbooks, which can cost several hundred dollars a semester • Transportation to college (bus passes or parking passes) • Laptops • Tutoring by community volunteers, who work one-on-one with students • Conversation Club, where students can practice English in a relaxed and stress-free setting
