About University of Guyana
The University of Guyana, located at its Turkeyen Campus in Greater Georgetown, is the nation’s sole national higher education institution, established in April 1963. With a mission to discover, generate, disseminate, and apply knowledge of the highest standard, the university serves the community and the nation while fostering an atmosphere of academic freedom and critical inquiry. Initially starting its operations at the Queens College compound, the university moved to its current campus in 1970 and has since expanded its academic offerings significantly.
Over the years, the University of Guyana has developed a diverse range of faculties and programs, beginning with the Arts, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. The establishment of the Faculty of Education in 1967 and the Faculty of Technology (now Faculty of Engineering and Technology) in 1969 marked the beginning of a broader academic framework. This was followed by the creation of the Faculty of Agriculture in 1977 and the Faculty of Health Sciences in 1981. The university also introduced the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) in 1996, reflecting its commitment to lifelong learning.
In addition to its core faculties, the university has established specialized units such as the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Biodiversity Centre, enhancing its research capabilities in environmental studies. The Berbice Campus, opened in 2000, further extends its reach across Guyana.
