Temwa

Temwa's objective is to help build a sustainable future for the people of Malawi through community-based projects. Temwa works with communities in Nkhata Bay North, an extremely remote area of Northern Malawi. These isolated communities are vulnerable to many challenges including chronic shortages of food, deforestation which leads to climate-related shocks, limited access to basic education, minimal employment opportunities, and high levels of HIV and AIDS. We aim to fight poverty, hunger and disease in Nkhata Bay North through projects in sustainable agriculture, vocational skills training, forestry, health education and school support. We do this by training villagers to grow a variety of vegetables and fruit to improve the nutrition in their diet; plant trees to combat the devastating effects of deforestation, run HIV testing clinics and work to combat the stigma, enhance the status of the Usisya community library to increase community activity engagement and improve literacy curriculum's for early grade students to increase their educational prospects. Our team in Malawi manage and ensure the safe keeping of all aspects of the projects on the ground. At any one time, we also have a selection of highly-skilled local and international volunteers who contribute in a range of different ways. The UK team consists of a dedicated group of volunteers, an experienced board of trustees, a Managing Director, and a small team overseeing programmes, fundraising and communications activities. This means minimal costs, with the majority of funds raised going directly to the programmes in Malawi. Temwa is supported by individual donors, volunteers and corporate partners.
