Meritas is premised on the Founders’ hypothesis that highly diligent and intelligent students can produce professional-level work, particularly when it comes to investment research. The idea for Meritas emerged upon learning about the strong performance of student-run investment funds and upon realizing that student investment organizations exist across all top U.S. colleges. Such organizations typically invest in equities and occasionally manage a small portion of their schools’ endowments. While the investment clubs provide their members with invaluable learning experiences, Meritas is intended to be a complementary offering, giving the members a tool to quantify their alpha and monetize their proprietary investment research. The Meritas website and mobile application allow users to operate virtual portfolios, compete in monthly stock picking competitions against their peers, and credential themselves for real life buy-side positions. Meritas is a platform where student investors can build both their track records and their networks. Meritas is actively growing its network of affiliate student investment organizations. Across the 23 participating schools (as of October 2018), more than 50 such organizations were identified. When including all finance-oriented student organizations, this figure exceeds 100.
