LUSA is in operation since 1987 and is today the biggest news agency in the Portuguese language worldwide. Lusa was formed as a merge from 2 previous agencies (ANOP and NP).
Although LUSA is owned in 50,1% by the state, 9 private organizations control the rest of the stock while the annual revenues are about 19 million Euros.
LUSA holds bureaus in all Portuguese district capitals and also in Bissau (Guinea-Bissau), Praia (Cape Verde), Luanda (Angola), Maputo (Mozambique), Dili (East Timor), São Paulo (Brazil), Macau (China), Madrid (Spain) and Brussels (Belgium), while correspondents are based in Berlin, London, Paris, Rome, Moscow, Washington, Rio
de Janeiro, Brasília, Johannesburg, Rabat, Beijing and Jakarta.
LUSA is a Co-founder of EPA (European Photo Association) and provides worldwide photo coverage with an average of 1.000 photos a day.
